“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one piece. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”—Ira Glass (via 3dcube)
This blog (click the link above!) belongs to a girl I had the pleasure of meeting and becoming friends with while I was in my Sophomore/Junior years of school. I still see her every now and then in the coffee shop where I work, and she is always so peppy and positive and is always asking about me rather than saying anything about herself. She is one of the sweetest people I know!
Her name’s Mami, and she’s from Japan! This is her blog—rather than posting things about her life, she combines it with a ton of positive reinforcement and help for not just people who have gone through the same events as her (things like adjusting to a whole new country), but for anyone—how we can be happy and build better personalities and be a happier person in general.
Even if you don’t like “overly happy things”, which I know a few people who do—her blog is amazing and worth every minute of reading! Very inspirational!
I’ve been asked a lot about my brush settings in SAI for drawing, linework, and coloring—so here you go!
Crayon brush - I really like the grungy effect that the crayon tool gives, however the default settings are a little too spotty for me. I edited them just a tad to get the smoothness I wanted along with still having that little bit of gritty-ness. I mainly use this for linework and keep it at a 3-5pt setting.
Watercolor brush - I use this brush sometimes to color with underneath my flat lines. I basically decreased the sensitivity a little bit to where you don’t have to push down as hard to get the color to show up/blend.
Other brushes I use are the pen tool and the marker tool, both for the occasional lineart but mainly for coloring. I really like cel-shading or flat coloring, so the pen tool gives me the accuracy I want with that.
I have a few more questions in my queue to answer, so if you’re curious about how I do anything, you know what to do! Leave me a message!
Hello! I finally updated my layout and while I get some more things implemented, I’m really loving this layout. :) Just FYI… The links on the sidebar are a little different, so here we go!
Personal/Journal — Self-explanitory. Personal posts, etc.
My Art — the tag for anything and everything that I draw that I post to this blog.
Shop — My Etsy! I’m bringing this back, with new items and everything!
Commission Info — This will have my commission status as well as any information you’ll need regarding commissioning me. (Even Gaia commissions haha!)
Otaku Corner — This is the tag for anything and everything that has to do with ranting about anime, videogames, manga, comics, anything considered “nerdy” (haha) or fandom-ish (Homestuck, MLP, anything like that). However, if you’d also like to follow it, I do have a Homestuck tag (that can also be found on the Tags page).
About — This is the page where I introduce myself and give links to other places that I frequent (society6, deviantART, Gaia, etc), as well as buttons linking back to my blog for anyone else’s use, et cetera. (I’ll soon have better social network icons on the sidebar as well!)
Tags — All (mostly) of the tags that I use on this blog, categorized for convenience. (I actually use this page a lot hahaha.)
Archive — The massive feed of everything I’ve ever posted on this blog.
And there you have it! I think this is a lot easier and looks a lot nicer—thanks to Stijn for his awesome themes. :)
EDIT //////// I also finally have a comment feature now! So instead of just liking or replying to a post via the dashboard, you can go to my blog and click “comment” and make your comment there (kind of a lot easier!) Yay!
Hey everyone! I’ve been doing some heavy maintenance to my blog—so I have a couple of updates for you!
I am completely getting rid of reblogged posts here on my main blog, kitty♥cooties (where you’re at now), unless they are for promoting other artists (commissions or giveaways I think are relevant to this blog, etc). Those posts will be tagged with “signal boost”. Reblogged posts will be sent to my reblog tumblr, erindynamic—as to eliminate clutter from other posts here!
This blog is going to be more of a personal blog as well as an art blog. If you are only here for my art, any and all personal posts will be marked as “personal” so feel free to block that tag as you see fit. If you think I should separate my personal posts from my art posts (separate them into different blogs), please leave me a message here!! I really miss my Blogspot but I don’t want to go back to that site, I love tumblr so much haha!
I have a page that has all (mostly all! I forget what I add sometimes) my tags listed here if you’re interested.
A fashion blog by yours truly is in the works!
Thank you all so much for the faithful follows! Bear with me while I update the layout and tweak a few more things. :)
I must be really, really sick. I’ve had these allergy things going on with me for like….a week or so now? UGH cough hack snot etc. I have been sitting in the cafe (ALSO MY JOB who does that) for like 2 hours now waiting on a phone call…………………..and I have successfully watched at least 20 Jenna Marbles videos.
hey all you cool dudes I’m sick, drinking orange juice and about to draw some ~*new button designs*~!! Come on by and say hi and tell me to suck it up and overcome my fear of nasty nasal decongestant medicine. also maybe give me an idea or two
